Maple Glazed Turnips

A warm and flavorful dish that combines maple and cinnamon with hearty root vegetables.

Ingredients

1 Tablespoon margarine or butter, melted
3 Tablespoons maple syrup or brown sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoons lemon juice
3 cups diced turnip or rutabaga
2 cups cubed sweet potato

Directions

  1. Wash hands with soap and water.
  2. Rinse or scrub fresh vegetables under running water before preparing.

  3. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  4. In a small bowl, mix together margarine or butter, maple syrup, cinnamon and lemon juice.
  5. Mix turnip and sweet potato pieces in a medium casserole dish. Add syrup mixture and stir to coat evenly.
  6. Cover and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Uncover and bake until browned, 20 to 30 minutes. Serve hot.
  7. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.

Notes

  • No maple syrup? Use 3 tablespoons packed brown sugar.
  • Try with other vegetables such as parsnips, carrots or winter squash.

Comments

I substituted rutabaga for turnips, and to save on cost I used brown sugar I had on hand instead of purchasing maple syrup. The recipe turned out great following the prep and baking instructions as written. GREAT recipe for rutabaga!
