Tips for Baking with Friends and Family
Holiday baking can be a fun way to spend time with your friends and family this season. Kids around? Get them involved with baking, too. Show kids how to:
- measure dry ingredients like flour, baking soda and seasonings.
- mix together wet and dry ingredients.
- scoop batter into muffin tins or pans.
Here are some more tips for success when baking:
- Prepare ahead of time by reading the recipe and ensuring you have the correct ingredients. You may need to add more time than the recipe calls for if you are new to a recipe.
- If you live near a store with a bulk bin section, try buying baking ingredients in bulk! When you buy the exact amount you need, you save money.
- Keep your baking space clean. Wipe down all surfaces before baking and use different towels for hands and dishes.
- Measure ingredients properly. Measure water, oil, milk and other liquids with a clear liquid measuring cup. Measure flour, sugar and other dry ingredients using dry measuring cups. Measuring spoons can be used for small amounts of any ingredient.
- Move oven racks before preheating to make sure they are where you want. When baking, do not place pans directly above or below another pan.
- Make sure to practice safety in the kitchen. When opening a hot oven, wait for steam to clear before checking or removing items. Use oven mitts or potholders—not a kitchen towel—to handle hot pans.
From all of us at Food Hero, we hope you have a safe and happy holiday season!
