When kids help make healthy food, they are more likely to try it. Show kids how to:
❁ pour milk into glasses to drink with a meal.
❁ shake or blend a smoothie.
❁ stir milk into pudding mix and add fruit.
❁ scrub sweet potatoes under cool running water.
❁ prick whole sweet potatoes with a fork before baking or microwaving.
❁ mix sweet potato cubes with oil and seasonings before roasting.
Fresh/Raw: Serve sticks or thin rounds with your favorite dip, or grate and toss in a salad.
Cook grains in large batches to use later:
❁ Divide cooked, cooled grains into single-use amounts in freezer bags or containers. Label and date. Refrigerate or freeze.
❁ Use refrigerated cooked grains within 3-4 days. Use frozen cooked grains within 2-3 months.
❁ Leeks can be eaten raw or cooked.
❁ Use sliced leeks in salads– green, pasta or potato.
❁ Add leeks to casseroles for a mild onion flavor.
❁ Roast leeks in the oven along with your favorite vegetables.
❁ Add leeks to soups or stews.
❁ wash produce under cool running water. A vegetable brush works well on turnips.
❁ use a vegetable peeler to remove only a thin layer of skin from vegetables.
❁ Choose turnips that are smooth skinned without cuts or soft spots. They should be firm and heavy for their size.
